Tea has been a vital sector in Sri Lanka's economy for over 130 years and is expected to maintain this position in the 21st Century .It is the largest agricultural crop and accounts for about 18% of the export income of the country. Tea sector is also the largest employer in the country and over one million people are directly and indirectly employed in the tea sector.
The annual tea production in Sri Lanka is approx. 320 million kg and Sri Lanka ranks as the third largest producer of tea in the world after China and India. Its product range includes orthodox black tea, CTC tea, green tea, organic tea, instant tea and RTD tea products.
Sri Lanka has diversified into specialties to cater to all tastes and demands globally. Sri Lanka is a one stop shop, where one could obtain orthodox black tea varieties (Ruhuna, Dimbula, Uva, Uda Pussellawa & Nuwara Eliya), CTC, small leaf varieties, tippy varieties from high, medium and low grown elevations.
Tea has been acclaimed, not only as a stimulating beverage for all seasons, but also as an exciting health beverage.
Colombo auction has remained one of the most active tea market and the largest auction center for tea in the world. It handles 6-7 million kilos of tea weekly.Sri Lanka's tea export volume is about 310 million kg , out of which 40% is in pre-packed form and all efforts are being taken to enhance this share.
Poland has emerged as the third largest market for Sri Lanka Tea Bags exports since 2004.
With the establishment of the Tea Promotion Unit of Sri Lanka Tea Board at the Embassy the tea promotion work in Poland took a new turn. The Unit regularly conducts liquid tea services, newspaper and Billboard advertising and participates at reputed International Food and Beverages fairs such as International Food and Drinks (IFE) Fair in Warsaw and Polagra Food Fair in Poznan, Poland and other neighboring countries.
Sri Lanka tea exports to Poland during 2007 were 3.2 million kgs with the value of exports USD 17.5 million. Tea accounts for approx.60% of Sri Lanka exports to Poland.

Sri Lanka Coconut Industry
Coconut is the largest plantation crop in Sri Lanka and the second largest after rice. Out of 0.45 million hectares of coconut 58 per cent belongs to the smallholder with an average of 0.5 hectare per farmer. It is estimated that 700,000 farmer households depend on coconut for their income.
Coconut is a versatile tree, which can be used to produce value added products from many parts of the tree. Several decades ago the processing sector was mostly confined to a few traditional products such as copra, coconut oil, desiccated coconut and coir. For several decades rubber has been a main revenue earner for a large population of rural
masses in Sri Lanka until industries like tea, textiles and apparel, tourism became prime
attractions. Though high cost of production and fluctuating prices have affected the growth, rubber industry is going to remain a major source of income and generator of employment to people in the rubber growing areas, in the millennium too. Sri Lanka has about 180 factories producing raw dry rubber, which is used in production of tyres, tubes, toys, shoes, garden hoses and many others. Also, 15 factories produce concentrated latex, which is the main raw material for surgical and household gloves, condoms and balloons, rubberised coir mattresses etc.
One third of the raw rubber production is consumed locally in rubber based manufacturing industries and the balance is exported. Rubber is identified as a major industry along with a few other industries
